Thrombosis Programs

Portola scientists are recognized leaders in the fields of platelet biology and thrombosis. Working together for more than a decade, our scientific team was the first to clone the platelet ADP receptor P2Y12, the target of both Plavix® (clopidogrel) and our own ADP receptor antagonist, elinogrel. Our team was also instrumental in the discovery, development and commercialization of the leading GP IIb-IIIa inhibitor, INTEGRILIN® (eptifibatide).

We are currently developing three compounds in the area of thrombosis:

  • Elinogrel, a direct-acting competitive and reversible i.v. and oral P2Y12ADP receptor antagonist, that is licensed to Novartis Pharma AG;
  • Betrixaban, a long-acting, oral direct Factor Xa inhibitor;
  • PRT064445 Factor Xa inhibitor antidote, a novel recombinant protein in development for the management or reversal of bleeding complications in the tens of millions of patients expected to be treated with Factor Xa inhibitors worldwide in the next decade

Both elinogrel and betrixaban are Phase 3-ready product candidates that have best-in-class features to address the global multi-billion hospital, specialty, and chronic care antiplatelet and anticoagulant markets, respectively.
